Acupuncture Session: What to Expect?

Your visit will begin with a consultation with your acupuncturist. You will talk about any symptoms, that you are currently experiencing including pain, relevant medical history information.

After a careful examination, your acupuncturist will discuss with you a personalized treatment plan that will address your unique needs and symptoms, including how many sessions to expect and plan consequently. Each session takes about an hour, except the initial visit that is longer.

Then, you will be asked to lie down, either face-up, face-down or on your side, depending on where the needless are inserted. The acupuncturist should use single-use disposable sterile needles. Acupuncture needles are just a little thicker than a human hair. They are solid, not hollow, like hypodermic needles, and are made of the high quality surgical steel.

At the insertion of each needle, there is little or no discomfort and is painless after placement. A feeling of tingling, heaviness or distention may be felt as the needle contacts the Qi. People generally enjoy their acupuncture sessions and report feeling deeply relaxed during and after treatment.

Sometimes the needles are heated with TDP lamp or moxa, or stimulated with electricity after insertion (electro-acupuncture). Once inserted, the needles will remain there for about twenty - thirty minutes.

For your session, please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, and make sure you’re not on an empty stomach or fasting.
